The Lemon Drop Martini was invented in 1970 (though there's a heated debate about the exact year) at Henry Africa’s, a pioneering “fern bar” in California known for its welcoming atmosphere and creative drinks. The cocktail’s creation is credited to Norman Jay Hobday, the bar’s owner, who wanted to attract a broader clientele by offering more approachable beverages at a time when most bars had little imagine beyond old standards. Inspired by the sweet-and-sour taste of the classic lemon drop candy, the original Lemon Drop combined vodka, triple sec, simple syrup, and fresh lemon juice, shaken and served in a sugar-rimmed martini glass. The drink quickly became popular locally and soon spread across the country, becoming a staple on cocktail menus and inspiring many variations. Over the years, the Lemon Drop Martini has maintained its appeal, celebrated for its refreshing balance of tartness and sweetness, and remains a beloved classic in the world of mixology.
